Race Course

SWIM:
Swimmers will complete a 1.2 mile Out-and-back swim route in the Aurora Reservoir, starting and finishing on the sandy beach to the left of the pavilion. The start will be in waves which will be posted at packet pick-up locations and on our website 1 week before the event. Water temperature in the reservoir in September is typically in the sixties, so wetsuits are encouraged.

BIKE:
Riders will complete a 40+ mile loop, with an out-and-back spur located in the first half of the course. The route will follow rural country roads that are open to light local traffic. The route covers a mix of hilly terrain and long flats through the farm & ranch country of eastern Colorado. The start and finish will be the hilliest part of the course.

NOTICE FROM STATE PATROL: Pre-riding the course is fine, however you must follow the rules of the road. Pack riding that impedes auto traffic is not allowed. Rolling through stop signs is not allowed. Riders who are caught violating these rules will be ticketed by State Patrol, and we will not allow you to start the race - entry fees will not be refunded. Please follow the rules of the road or it will jeopardize our ability to continue holding this event.

Bike Aid Stations: There will be 3 water bottle hand-ups on the bike course stocked with chilled water and Gatorade drink. Please discard all empty bottles at these zones only. Aid stations will be located approximately at miles 11, 30, and 45. These locations are equally spaced by the time it will take to ride between them, based on terrain and normal wind direction.

RUN: The 13.1 mile run course is a winding route on the bike path that wraps around the Aurora Reservoir. The run will be an out and back format, with aid stations at each mile. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, with some hills near the beginning and end. The course is completely closed to motor vehicles and follows a mix of dirt roadways, concrete, and asphalt bike paths. The run leaves the back corner of the upper parking lot and travels counter clockwise around the lake to a turn-around point on the dam, then returns via the same route to finish near the pavilion at Aurora Reservoir swim beach.
Aid Stations will be located at each mile of the run. Ice Cold Water and Gatorade drink, as well as Cola, fruit, cookies, gels, electrolyte tablets, and other food items will be available at all aid stations. Ice will also be available at miles 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11. A self-serve First-Aid station will be located at the turn-around.

DUATHLON:
The Harvest Moon Duathlon is a 5K (3.1 mile) run, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run event. Duathletes will all begin in the same wave after all of the swimmers have entered the water. An aid station will be set up at the finish of the 5K Run. Following the opening run, racers will then follow the same bike and second run courses as the triathletes. There will be one aid station at mile-3 of the first 5K run

AQUABIKE:
The Harvest Moon AquaBike is a 1.2 Mile Swim, 56 mile bike event followed by a 200 meter run to the finish line. AquaBikers will all begin in the same wave of the swim. Participants will follow the same swim and bike courses as the triathletes. Upon finishing the bike, AquaBikers will complete the first 150 meters of the run course with the triathletes, then veer left to cross the finish line.

A USAT Pro license is required for cash awards in 2009

AGE GROUP - Triathlon:
Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each 5-year age group. Elite competitors will be excluded from the age group awards. First-place in each age group will take home a gift certificate from Colorado Multisport. Beginning in 2006, triathlon rules state that your race age is determined by your age on December 31st of the race year. Your age-group for awards will follow this rule.

CLYDESDALE/ATHENA - Triathlon:Awards will be presented to the top-3 overall Athena Finishers, and the top-3 Clydesdale Finishers in age 39 & under and age 40 & over.

RELAY TEAMS - Triathlon:
The top-3 relay teams in Male, Female, and Coed divisions will receive awards in the triathlon. A Triathlon team consists of 2 or 3 participants. Members of the first-place in team in each category will take home a gift certificate from Colorado Multisport.

CLUB COMPETITION:
A $250 Cash Award will be presented to the first place triathlon club.  In response to the growing number of triathlon clubs in Colorado, we will again recognize club competition in the Harvest Moon Triathlon in 2009!  Athletes will still compete in their age-groups - this is just an additional category to keep things interesting! Please fill in your club affiliation when entering each of the races. A list of club members will be posted at packet pick-up for each race. If your name is not listed as being a member of your club, notify the registration desk Before the race. Changes will not be made on race day. The format will be as follows: In the Harvest Moon Triathlon, the times of the top-4 athletes in each club will be added together for a "Club Time". The club with the lowest combined time will be declared the winner. One of your 4 scoring finishers, however, must be a woman - therefore, if your top 10 finishers are men and the 11th is a woman, then the top-3 men's times will be added to your top placing woman's time to arrive at the "Club Time." In the unlikely case of a tie, the time of the first non-scoring club member will be used as a tie-breaker. A $250 Check will be awarded to the winning club at our awards ceremony, however all clubs must be legitimate (not just a bunch of ringers trying to score some cash!). Legitimate clubs include, but are not limited to, organized running, cycling, and triathlon clubs.

Duathlon & AquaBike Awards

DUATHLON:
A $50 Cash Award will be presented to the first place overall male and female finishers in both the duathlon and the aquabike. In addition, we will present awards to the first place finishers in each 5-year age group, including a gift certificate or merchandise award from one of our sponsors.
RELAY TEAMS, CLYDESDALE, ATHENA - These categories will not be offered in the duathlon or aquabike competition.
You must be present to claim your award, or have another participant pick it up for you. Unclaimed awards will be raffled at the awards presentation and will not be mailed!

Packet Pick-Up & Pre-Race Meetings We are triathletes ourselves, and understand that it can be a big inconvenience to attend packet pick-up and pre-race meetings on the day before a triathlon. As a result, we have done away with pre-race meetings and instead covered all important information in our pre-race mailing. Please read your race confirmation packet carefully, as you will be responsible for all information covered in it. If you have any questions that are not answered in the packet, please feel free to contact us by email prior to race day, or come to our Q&A session on race morning.

Packet pick-up will be in Aurora Fri Sept 11th at the Red Lion Hotel 4:00-7:00pm

Early Packet Pick-Up will be held in Boulder Thurs Sept 10th at Fleet Feet Sports 4:00-7:00pm

In addition, all participants who's entries are
received prior to August 30th will be offered the option to receive their packet by mail (a shipping and handling fee will apply). Details will be included in your confirmation packet.
Timing Chip Distribution will be done on race morning during body marking outside of the transition area. You must show photo ID to receive your timing chip. No ID means No Chip, and you will not be allowed to race. No exceptions will be made. You must return your chip following the event. Participants who have not returned their timing chips will be charged the replacement cost for the chip
.

THERE WILL BE NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION or PACKET PICK-UP!!!

Directions:
The race site is the Aurora Reservoir, located a short drive from Denver. Spectators will be charged a $10.00 per vehicle entrance fee to the park. This fee will be waived for athletes on race day. The most direct route is to take I-70 east from the Denver, and exit onto I-225. Exit I-225 at 6th Avenue and turn left (east). 6th Ave. eventually becomes Gun Club Rd. Stay on this road as it continues past Buckley AFB. A short time later you will see signs for Quincy Ave and the Aurora Reservoir. Turn left on Quincy and right into the reservoir.

A slightly longer alternate route will allow you to drive a portion of the bike course. From Denver, take I-70 east to Exit 295 (Watkins). Turn right (south) on Watkins Rd. and follow to Quincy. Turn right onto Quincy and you will see the reservoir entrance on your left in approximately 5 miles.
